Chemical Eye Injury: What the First Hour Is For

A chemical eye injury is lime, acid, alkali, or a factory splash on the surface — and the first hour is irrigation, not a Google of packages. What to do in the first hour
Hold the lids open. Pour clean water or saline for a long time — not a polite splash. Tap water is honest if that is what you have. Do not hunt for a special bottle while the chemical sits. Remove contact lenses after the stream is running if they will come out easily; do not waste minutes digging.
Alkali (lime, cement, drain cleaner) keeps eating after the splash. Acid hurts and may look quieter. Both need the same first hour: volume of water, then a doctor who can stain the cornea and check the pH if they have the strip. Do not put oil, ghee, milk, or a steroid drop because a chemist offered one.
If the globe is open, a metal shard went in, or you cannot see light, that is eye injury insurance plus urgent care — still not a booking product. We do not run trauma before-after as marketing.
After the rinse: what we actually treat
Once the chemical is diluted, the file becomes days and weeks: pain control, a stained cornea, sometimes an amniotic membrane, sometimes a later transplant if the surface scars. Fungal keratitis is a different vegetative injury. Endophthalmitis is infection inside the eye. Chemical injury is a burn of the surface that can stay medical for a month.
