Keratoconus Insurance in India: Lenses Almost Never, CXL Is a Different File
Keratoconus insurance in India does not pay for scleral lenses as a health claim. CXL and transplant sit on the function side — we still check your policy at evaluation.

Keratoconus insurance in India is the search you type after a counter mixed three bills: a new glasses pair, a scleral lens, and a cross-linking slot. They are not the same claim. Insurers ask whether the work was to treat or prevent loss of function, or to improve appearance and convenience. Spectacles, soft contacts and even medically necessary scleral lenses for keratoconus sit on the optical-appliance list — almost never covered. CXL and transplant are about holding the window of the eye. That is a different file. Still not a promise until we have read your wording.
This is the typical Indian pattern, not a ReliveCure rate card. The clinical map is keratoconus treatment. This URL is cover. The parent rule is eye surgery insurance in India. You come to ReliveCure in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Pune or Mumbai for a free evaluation. We map first.
What insurers actually separate
They are not paying for a steeper glasses number. They are asking whether the cornea is still a medical problem.
Appliances. Glasses and contact lenses — including sclerals that give the best vision on a cone — are optical appliances. The remaining-treatments guide lists them as almost never covered. A letter that says “medically necessary scleral” does not convert an appliance into day-care surgery.
OPD maps. Topography, tomography, thickness and the consult around them are usually outpatient. Without an OPD rider they are typically self-pay even when a later CXL is listed day care. Day care is not an exclusion for listed procedures; it is also not a magic stamp for tests done in the clinic.
CXL. Corneal cross-linking is offered, when it is honest, to slow progression on a cornea that still allows it. That is function: hold the window. Some wordings still treat anything that changes refraction as convenience. We do not invent an exception. We check the clause at evaluation.
Transplant. When the cornea has scarred, hydrops has clouded it, or the cone is past what CXL can reasonably hold, corneal transplant is reconstructive. Insurance usually looks at medical necessity — not at whether you hoped to drop glasses.
LASIK on an unmapped or cone-shaped cornea is usually the wrong tool. Elective laser for convenience is almost never covered. If that was the shopping tab, start on LASIK only after the map says the cornea is regular.
| Item | Typical position | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Spectacles / contacts / sclerals | Almost never | Optical appliance |
| OPD topography and consult | Usually not | OPD unless you have a rider |
| CXL for documented progression | Depends | Function vs refractive-convenience wording |
| Transplant when the cornea failed | Usually function | Medical necessity; tissue timing is not a TPA promise |
| LASIK on a keratoconus cornea | Not this file | Wrong tool |

Notes that survive — and phrases that kill a file
Bring serial maps if you have them. One noisy reading is not progression. Thickness belongs in the same envelope. Visual acuity at presentation. If CXL or transplant is done, the operative line should talk progression or a failed window, not “patient desired better unaided vision.” Those three phrases that lose claims — “for cosmetic improvement,” “patient desired better appearance,” “elective procedure” — do not belong on a keratoconus file we control.
Cashless option also available. May not be as well — depends on the personal case. We check at evaluation.
Call today versus a planned map
Sooner: a sudden white cloud (hydrops), pain, a cornea that was clear yesterday.
Booked evaluation: glasses number jumping every few months, ghosting, a lens that will not sit, a CXL quote already in the WhatsApp chat — bring old prescriptions.
Not this URL: a curtain over vision, a white reflex in a child, chemical in the eye now.
Do not rub the eyes as a habit. Do not pay a LASIK deposit while the shape is unmapped.
